The NRLโ€™s introduction of the two-point field goal for successful kicks from beyond the 40-metre line was derided as one of the more pointless rule changes of recent times.

But despite the assumption that it would be a rarely-used commodity, weโ€™ve already seen Adam Reynolds boot the first two-point field goal in Round 5 and Nathan Cleary slot a crucial deadlock-breaker a week later.

To celebrate the elusive art of the field goal, Will Evans from This Warriors Life ranks the best exponents of the NRL era in this weekโ€™s Zero Tackle Top 8.

Some the most clutch, sweet-striking field goal kickers of the modern era, including Shaun Johnson, Anthony Milford, and icon match-winners Johnathan Thurston and Andrew Johns, couldnโ€™t squeeze into this list.

Without further ado, here is this week's edition: field goal exponents.

7. Chris Sandow

South Sydney halfback Sandow developed into one of the NRLโ€™s foremost purveyor of field goal kicking immediately after debuting in 2008. After kicking a crucial one-pointer on first grade debut in a 35-28 upset of the Warriors, Sandow capped an extraordinary comeback with a late field goal for a 29-28 victory over the Cowboys in just his third game on the way to Dally M Rookie of the Year honours.

The Indigenous livewire landed seven field goals in 2011, including one of the best of all time from 49 metres out in golden point to down the Roosters 21-20. Sandow took his match-winning wares to Parramatta on a lucrative contract in 2012, slotting a field goal in the last minute of golden point in a win over Penrith that year. He left for Super League in 2015 with 18 field goals in 159 NRL games to his name.
