FIVE potential Queensland Maroons State of Origin bolters

Could any of these players line up for the Maroons?

With the appointment of Billy Slater, a new era for Queensland Rugby League is underway.

Given the manner of QLD's Origin defeat last season I would be very surprised if we didn't see a host of changes.

Just last week, incoming coach Slater was quoted as saying "There are no positions locked in." If this doesn't foreshadow changes, nothing will.

With plenty of Origin players either out of form or on the downswing of their career, I'd expect to see more than one youngster come into debut.

Below are five bolters who could make their Origin debut come Game 1.

Jeremiah Nanai

Last week, the supremely talented second rower pledged his allegiance to the Maroons. It was a bitter blow to New Zealand as he was a near-lock to play in the World Cup.

The Kiwis' loss is the cane toad's gain as Nanai is very much in the reckoning for Origin 1.

His brilliant start to the season saw him become the target of a multi-team race for his signature. He signed a one year deal to stay with the Cowboys and may make his representative debut before his next contract negotiation.

While Felise Kaufusi and Kurt Capewell are likely to hold onto their starting spots from Game 3, Nanai shapes as a very possible debutant from the bench.

Nanai has five tries in six games as well as almost 100 running metres and three offloads.

His defence is the only worry (85 per cent tackle efficiency is not ideal) and being just 19 years of age I certainly wouldn't be throwing him into the run on battle.

That said, if his name isn't in the discussion for a bench spot, then I'd be lost for words.

Reed Mahoney

Harry Grant, for mine, is the premier number nine in the competition right now. At very least he is the main man for Queensland.

Ben Hunt is a brilliant player but surely it is time for a more dynamic option off the bench. Reed Mahoney looks that option.

There's even a line of thinking that Mahoney could start the contest and allow Harry Grant to come on and wreak havoc after 20 or so minutes.

Grant is very much an 80-minute player but I'd be looking at Mahoney on the bench if the Maroons are going to carry a second option at hooker.

Given Mahoney's defensive strengths he could very well come into the lock position allowing either himself or Grant to rove in the line.

Reece Walsh

The Warriors youngster was a shock inclusion last year however missed the game due to injury. That said, with Ponga back, surely Walsh is no longer under consideration?

To be quite frank the current form of Ponga has been less than stellar. Walsh has been far more dangerous thus far in 2022.

Ponga also became a target under the high ball and was routinely outjumped by Tom Trbojevic in previous contests.

Walsh could also very well slot into the utility spot. His speed and elusiveness could cause nightmares for the tiring Blues middles.

Ponga also defended in the line and almost won an Origin game in a roaming role previously. He could switch if Walsh comes into the custodian role.

Walsh has experience in the halves if the Maroons want to go a different route. A long shot at best but an exciting one nonetheless.

It's far more likely that Walsh would be eased in via the bench.

Sam Walker

It's almost inconceivable that the Maroon's halves pairing won't be Dally Cherry-Evans and Cameron Munster. They're likely to be the Kangaroo's halves pairing come the end of year World Cup.

That said, Cherry-Evans has had an indifferent Origin career to date. Many Queensland fans have been calling for a new option at seven.

Step forward, Sam Walker.

Walker has been a prodigy during his young NRL career and has easily outplayed Luke Keary in 2022.

It would be a massive risk to throw a youngster to the lions but if Billy Slater is looking for a fresh side then Walker coming in for the captain certainly achieves that.

I have big concerns over Walker in defence with the Blues almost certain to target his small frame, but his abilities in attack would scare the big Blues forwards.

Part of me wants to see Walker run out. There's no doubt the Maroons need a new approach. Perhaps Cherry-Evans dropping to the bench is the way to achieve that?

Patrick Carrigan

Carrigan, injury allowing, needs to be there come Origin 1.

Francis Molo and Thomas Flegler are at long odds to retain their jumpers from Origin 3 last season, especially with Carrigan fit and firing.

With a 98 per cent tackle efficiency, I have no concerns with Carrigan's ability to match it with the NSW middles.

The Maroons have plenty of impact forwards in Fifita, Papalii and co but they need someone capable of big stats and big minutes with minimal fuss.

Carrigan fits that role perfectly.

Far more though than just a tackling machine, Carrigan averages almost 130 metres running per game. QLD need to win the forward battle to overcome the beastly NSW Origin outside backs.

I can't see how Slater can possibly overlook Carrigan come Origin One.
