Manly chairman and co-owner Scott Penn is delighted with Des Hasler's season, and wants to offer the Sea Eagles coach a long-term deal to remain at the club.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Penn says Hasler has found the "magic formula" at the Sea Eagles this season, with the club in fourth place with three rounds to play.

Hasler is currently contracted until the end of the 2021 season, but the two parties will dicuss an extension at the end of the year.

โ€œOf course, of course. Thatโ€™s how I felt eight years ago (when Hasler left for Canterbury). Nothing has changed," Penn told the Daily Telegraph when asked if he wants to extend Hasler's deal.

โ€œI know what heโ€™s capable of and how much respect he garners within the playing group. Thatโ€™s important.

โ€œOne of the great things we have always known about Des is that he always gets the best out of people.

โ€œHe shows superstars how they can improve and he shows up-and-comers what is possible. That is always the magic formula and he is demonstrating it again, which is great.

โ€œI think it (Haslerโ€™s return) was good timing for both of us. He needed us and we needed him.

โ€œIt was certainly the right move and I think we always knew we had a fantastic squad with great potential. We just needed the right person to bring it out.โ€

Hasler hasn't even finished the first year of his three-year deal, meaning there's no need for a contract extension soon, although it's something both parties will be monitoring.

โ€œThe fact is we struck what we all thought was a fair contract at the time and we still think itโ€™s right," Penn said.

โ€œWe are in the first year of a three-year contract so thereโ€™s no need to do anything at this point. Itโ€™s probably premature.

โ€œAs all coaches have, there are significant bonuses and the like in contracts for performance.

โ€œLetโ€™s see how we end the year and take it from there. There is no hurry on either side at this point. Letโ€™s wait and see how the year pans out and we will take it from.โ€

The Sea Eagles were widely tipped to be a bottom four side in 2019, but have surprised the competition with their play all season long.

  1. Onya dessy. Ive liked dessy ever since she ripped that door off in the dressing room that day & it fell on Jamie lion lol.

  2. True that Edwuardo, bellyache is another coach that makes me laugh. She reminds me of the spoilt brat that expects to win all the time, then chucks a mental temper tantrum when things don’t go her way haha good value.

  3. Smart to sign him up longer, also need to get a succession plan going so get in an assistant who is all manly and for him to learn of des to take over down the track, and hopefully des to head of football department for as long as he needs to he around

  4. Smart for him (Des) to sign up for longer, yes.
I rate Dessie, and pretty much always have, he’s got results this year, and I’m the first to argue (most) people are way too quick to blame a coach, and call for a change. All that said, he’s 1 year into a 3 year contract and there’s talk (support even) for an extension. Why, why now? If both parties are happy they can just keep renewing as they go along, if the coach isn’t happy, you probably don’t want him much longer, and if the club isn’t happy, long contracts hurt.
What happens next year if Manly don’t make the 8, and what if it happens again in 2021?
Lock it in Dessie, because you’ve got nothing to lose, and potentially a lot to gain.
