The Manly Sea Eagles are fighting to hold on to the Trbojevic brothers after salary cap sanctions force them into back-ended contracts.
The NRL fined the Sea Eagles $750,000, suspended two officials and deducted $660,000 from their salary cap over two season (2018-19) following breaches over the span of five years.
Manly fullback Tom Trbojevic has voiced his concerns regarding back-ended contracts that are being offered to him and brother Jake Trbojevic, stating he does not want his next contract to hurt the Sea Eagles down the line.
“I guess you want to steer clear of them (back-ended contracts). They can put teams under a lot of pressure,” Trbojevic told NRL.com.
“I’ve still got a long time left here.
“I really enjoy playing at this club. I hadn’t expected the (contract) talk to come on this early.
“We’ve got the rest of this year and another year at this club. Hopefully we’ll be able to extend that further.”
Whilst the Trbojevic brothers are contracted until the end of 2020, clubs are able and free to negotiate with the duo from the 1st of November.
With the Sea Eagles already signing captain Dale Cherry-Evans on a big-money deal, signing both the Trbojevic brothers could place a great deal of pressure on the club’s salary cap.
