Cronulla has spoken to Penrith GM Phil Gould about joining the Sharks as their football operations boss, according to Fox Sports’ James Hooper.

It is understood that tensions are boiling between Gould and the Panthers and his relationship with Ivan Cleary is sour following the latter's sacking four years ago.

And Hopper has revealed that the Sharks are looking to capitalise on the reported falling out.

“As it sits at the moment they are just some behind the scenes conversations,” Hooper said on NRL 360.

“The Sharks powerbrokers have been having some significant discussions behind the scenes.”

According to NRL 3560 co-host Paul Kent, Gould held discussions with Cronulla but declined the offer.

New Corp's Phil Rothfield told Macquarie Sports Radio he thinks Gould will quit his role at the Panthers by season's end.
