After having his passport withheld for seven weeks in Singapore for using "vile and disgusting" language towards public officials, former rugby league star Mark Coyne has been stood down from his position as ARL Commissioner, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.
The ARLC and NRL code-of-conduct states that a player must self-report charges against whether in Australia or outside.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that three days before the first State of Origin match, Coyne was held in a Singaporean cell overnight and his passport was briefly taken from him.
The incident that got him in hot water was outside the Singapore Grand Hyatt and resulted in a doorman calling local police on Coyne as he refused to withdraw disrespectful comments.
It was believed that he may have withheld information about his charges to save embarrassment for the rugby code following the Summer of Shame in which many NRL players were charged with sexual and domestic assault.
Coyne did not attend all three Origin matches including the final try by NSW which was compared to his match-winning try in 1994.
