South Sydney are preparing themselves for the possibility of captain Sam Burgess being forced into early retirement due to ongoing injuries.

Burgess turns 31 in December this year, and was recently ruled out of the upcoming Great Britain tour after sustaining a chronic shoulder injury that denied him from playing a full season with he Rabbitohs.

It was reported by Fox Sportsย that Burgess has just 25 per cent bone left in the shoulder area.

Burgess has already conceded the fact that he won't be able to see out the four-year deal that was announced last year.

There are great fears that he won't be right for the beginning of next season, with concern around the chronic arthritis.

"It's a bit early for that call," Rabbitohs head of football Shane Richardson told SMH.

After already undergoing two full shoulder reconstructions, the 30-year-old required more surgery midway through the NRL season. Although renowned for playing through the pain, the injury certainly affected him during the Rabbitohs' preliminary finals loss to Canberra.

Burgess is undeniably concerned about how he will perform next season, despite having a high pain threshold for the majority of his career.

The news piles on for Souths, who earlier this year dealt with NRL legend Greg Inglis impending retirement following chronic shoulder and knee problems.

The inspirational captain's brother, Tom, is optimistic about the Souths leader continuing his career at any level.

"Obviously he missed a few games this year and he's made the smart decision, I think," he said.

"If you're missing more than a couple of games a year through chronic injury then you've got to think about it. You speak to the medical staff and make a smart decision.

"He needs to recuperate his body properly in the off-season. He'll get his body right and get himself right for next year.

"He's very determined to get it right and I'm sure he will."

  1. That’s the class of the man.
Played all year with a busted shoulder and did nothing unlike media mole cronk from the slurry stained roosters who spent every day telling us what a hero he was with nothing more than a bruised shoulder.

  2. So the slurry stained sombreros give life membership to a player who earnt his reputation playing 95% for another club.
That’s up there with the 5000 free memberships handed out every year.
    Priceless

  3. Heโ€™s started dribbling out these excuses to take attention away from the fact that he led the stain to another failed season.

  4. Sam Burgess copped a complete ruthless belting from Sydney in the final premiership match of the season. It was to his benefit that he could not back up the following week in the semi against the might of those Roosters, when they lifted their intensity for semi final football, otherwise he would have been damaged for life.

George Burgess is trying by example to influence his brother by heading back to England where he will never have to face the back to back Premiers. Unless they play them in the World Club Challenge.

  5. If and irs a massive if, he gets hus shoukder right for the f ou est game of the year against Sydney Roosters. Then I’m afraid to say for Soufths fans. It will be hus last game.

Undoubtedly if the old boy wants to prolong his career, then he needs to pull somebodies hair in the trials and cop a suspension so he can avoid JWH and his tough Rooster buddies

  6. Just read the slurry 6 again sombreros are offering a buy 1 get 1 life membership deal on a desperate attempt to lift off the bottom of nrl clubs.

  7. Back2WOMBAT19 I was surprised when I read elsewhere your 30 year old daughter’s grandchildren are named Sammy, Georgy and Tommy.
Surely a coincidence but must still urk you.๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

  8. Shame Sammy and the Rabbitohs weren’t rightfully in the GF instead with the 10 minutes to go.
The roosters and their supporters were gassed and despite the ref changing to last tackle, Souths would have handled it better and ashed them and their supporters.

“Sam Burgess copped a complete ruthless belting from Sydney in the final premiership match of the season.”

You mean the game Sam single handedly dismantled Hargreaves and his puppets after which the roosters had the MRC suspend him for the semi?
The Chairman of the MRC departed a week later. Says it all.
When Sam played this year the slurry stained themselves.
    No argument. Its embedded.

  11. 6 unanswered comments, Stephanie is still jealous of the most successful club of all time. Time to move on little fella.

  12. The Rules also say that:
“The guidelines also state the trainer’s presence can’t “constitute a disadvantage to the opposing team”.

But where there is corruption, then there are no rules.

  13. Alex, this rule has been expressed in many forums by anyone with half a brain.
The WOMBATS on here and the roosters themselves didn’t have the dignity and character to at least say the ref stuffed up and the Raiders were wrongfully denied the opportunity to win the game.
It runs in line with the culture of this club from the hierarchy to fan base which is further testament to why they have the big problem of depleting membership.
It was also depicted at the game itself where the rooster fan contingent was estimated at only around 8000 (not counting the free tickets) amongst the 82,000 present.

How do you respond to facts when as a WOMBAT you have no choice other than to agree?
You don’t have the integrity to acknowledge anything factually negative against your sombreros.

  15. WOMBAT 2 when you say “most successful club of all time ” I presume you are referring to poaching and salary cap cheating being the obvious 2.
There isn’t anything else one can put forward relating to “most successful”

  16. Back2back2back20_20 the Roosters have played in 8 grand finals in the past 20yrs. So I estimate the Sydney Roosters will win their 22 premiership before Souths. Henceforth we are gaining on the Rabbit quicker than George Byegess flew out of Australia.

    All the same WoodRot!!!
    You’re got a lot of teams in the Bottom 4 , Back2Basics.
By the time you’re finished telling us all who’ll be in the bottom 4, it will be impossible for that many teams to be in the bottom 4.
