Wayne Bennett's contract as coach of South Sydney runs until the end of the 2020 season, and one big name is eyeing off the chance to be his successor.

Eddie Jones, who coached England to the Rugby World Cup final last month, could swap union for league, as the Tasmanian looks for a way to return home.

With the Wallabies without a coach after Michael Cheika left his post following their World Cup exit, many thought Jones would return home in that capacity, although the Sydney Morning Herald believes Jones wants to give the NRL a try.

“From what I can gather, he has told mates that taking over from Wayne Bennett when he finishes at Souths appeals," Danny Weidler writes.

“He has a soft spot for the club. It’s doubtful the Rabbitohs would be aware of his ambitions because he has only shared his league thoughts with a select few.”

Jones has expressed his love for rugby league in the past, and recently hosted Canberra coach Ricky Stuart in the England camp during the World Cup.
