Paul Vautin is well known for coaching Queensland to a series whitewash in 1995. The rugby personality has expressed his interest in returning to the Maroons as coach if Kevin Walters departs with the side after this year’s season.
Walters may depart with the Maroons should they lose in the series decider later this week. This comes after the Maroons' lost the series last year under his reign as well as speculation that Walters may move on to coach the Gold Coast Titans next season.
Whilst Vautin acknowledges that there are other capable candidates to replace Walters, he is also very confident he could be the man to coach the Maroons to victory, should he be given the opportunity.
"I think I could do it, it's a pretty simple job coaching Origin," Vautin told ABC Grandstand.
"You haven't got to come up with 35 different tactics to win the game. You've just got to get them to play for you and play for your state.
"But I think there's other people probably better credentialed at this stage of my life."
Vautin has enjoyed a career in media since retiring as one of Queensland’s greatest players in 1991. Now 59 years old, Vautin hopes to step up and coach the Maroons after coaching them to a 3-0 victory in 1995.
