Paul Vautin is well known for coaching Queensland to a series whitewash in 1995. The rugby personality has expressed his interest in returning to the Maroons as coach if Kevin Walters departs with the side after this yearโ€™s season.

Walters may depart with the Maroons should they lose in the series decider later this week. This comes after the Maroons' lost the series last year under his reign as well as speculation that Walters may move on to coach the Gold Coast Titans next season.

Whilst Vautin acknowledges that there are other capable candidates to replace Walters, he is also very confident he could be the man to coach the Maroons to victory, should he be given the opportunity.

"I think I could do it, it's a pretty simple job coaching Origin," Vautin told ABC Grandstand.

"You haven't got to come up with 35 different tactics to win the game. You've just got to get them to play for you and play for your state.

"But I think there's other people probably better credentialed at this stage of my life."

Vautin has enjoyed a career in media since retiring as one of Queenslandโ€™s greatest players in 1991. Now 59 years old, Vautin hopes to step up and coach the Maroons after coaching them to a 3-0 victory in 1995.

  1. Fatty could do it! Just look a who is coaching the current teams. There seems to be a coach for each individual player, whilst the Head Coach just hires coach whisperers and fronts the Media. With his media experience Fatty would do a good job. BRING BACK FATTY.

  2. One of the funniest blokes on the idiot box today is fatty. Love his commentary, always get a laugh from him. Along with Rabs, sterlo & even gus are my faves. (even though gus can be annoying). All other wanna be commentators are crap & don’t come close to these guys.
