Rugby League!!! This game never lets us down and what a weekend of footy this was.
We had a game decided on the literal last play of the 80 minutes, the mother of all upsets by the struggling Sea Eagles and the Bunnies sent a big, premiership message.
1. Rabbitohs (Last Week: 3)
The Bunnies have ascended to the number one spot on the rankings with an incredible, upset win over the red-hot Dragons. Damien Cook has booked himself an Origin jumper with an incredible performance. The Burgess boys and Angus Crichton easily outpointed their soon to be Origin heavy Dragons opponents. This was an entertaining game won by a red-hot, in form Bunnies side that many are starting to take very seriously.
2. Dragons (Last Week: 1)
The Dragons dropped their second game of the season with a loss to Bunnies at ANZ Stadium. Things just didn't click for the competition leaders with Ben Hunt and Gareth Widdop barely sighted. Tyson Frizell was an absolute monster in scoring two tries and being the Dragons best by a mile. A potential injury to Jack de Belin is a worry but overall there's no need for panic stations.
3. Storm (Last Week: 4)
The Premiers bounced back from their horror show last weekend with a fairly routine victory over the Titans. Although they made it harder for themselves than it should have been, ultimately the job was done. Nelson Asofa-Solomona led the way with 170 running metres. He's hard to stop when in full flight. Dale Finucane re-entered his name into rep discussion. Josh Addo-Carr is the fastest man in league.
4. Panthers (Last Week: 5)
The Panthers are another side who rebounded after a poor round nine. The four tries to three result was probably a little closer than the Panthers' efforts deserved. Tyrone Peachey had a wow of a game and backed up James Maloney very well. RCG and Trent Merrin dominated the middle which laid the platform for the outside backs. That is the Penrith performance we expect. Tough up the middle and flashy out wide. Good win.
5. Warriors (Last Week: 2)
Oh o! The less said about this game for the Warriors and their fans, the better. To say they were outplayed is the understatement of the season. Nothing went right for the previously high flying Warriors. RTS made a mountain of metres but that is about the length of the positives. This week's video session will not be an enjoyable one.
6. Sharks (Last Week: 7)
This was not free-flowing but this was brave. The Sharks went to Canberra and took two competition points despite being without Paul Gallen, Luke Lewis, Wade Graham, Jayson Bukuya and Scott Sorenson. James Segeyaro had his best game for the Sharks in a dazzling performance. Valentine Holmes reminded everyone of his credentials after an early error. The Sharks have now won four games in a row and should be in the top three here, but are yet to click for any period of time.
7. Roosters (Last Week: 10)
THIS was what we have been expecting from the Roosters all season. THIS was scary to watch if you're a fan of any of the other 15 teams. Whether or not the Roosters can back this up is in question after their stop-start efforts this season but this was brilliant. Cooper Cronk and Luke Keary ran the game, JWH was a man possessed, Ryan Matterson is a monster out wide, and Blake Ferguson and Joseph Manu had a field day. Great effort.
8. Tigers (Last Week: 11)
The Tigers are back. After a pretty ordinary run of results the Tigers hit back in fashion at their spiritual home. A 20-12 win over the Cowboys sees them back in the winners circle. Esan Marsters is an absolute monster out wide as is Mahe Fonua. The weapon of an outside back ran for 230 metres and left plenty of defenders lying in the process. I wouldn't want to be marking him in upcoming games.
9. Broncos (Last Week: 6)
The Broncos would have been expecting to celebrate a win in front of their home crowd, despite being the away side, on Saturday night. Manly were in awful form while the Broncos themselves had been slowly building to some sort of form. Unfortunately the combinations just aren't working at Red Hill right now. James Roberts was shifted to the left to allow Jack Bird to return to right centre but it didn't work. That Anthony Milford try was the highlight of the round though.
10. Raiders (Last Week: 8)
Canberra fans will not be happy about letting this one get away. At home against a Sharks side sans their top five back rowers and Josh Dugan. The game changed when Blake Austin went off injured but even still, the Raiders really shouldn't be losing this game. Their forwards just couldn't work over the Sharks reserve grade back row and the likes of Aiden Sezer and Jack Wighton just aren't up to standard at the moment.
11. Knights (Last Week: 9)
Alarm bells are ringing on the Hunter. The Knights really didn't impose themselves despite being at home to a Penrith side coming off a shock loss to the Cowboys. The game plan has become pass it to Kalyn Ponga and hope, which as good as the youngster is, is a dangerous way to play. The Knights really need to settle on a partner in the halves for young Connor Watson. Lachlan Fitzgibbon continues to impress.
12. Bulldogs (Last Week: 15)
Fair to say that the Dogs needed a win this Friday over the Eels. That's exactly what they did, despite making it tough for themselves. The Dogs kicked four penalty goals, which was the difference in the end, but they forced the issue and earned penalties against an Eels side that was forced to go backwards. Will Hopoate led the metres made stat but the Dogs forwards stood up.
13. Sea Eagles (Last Week: 16)
Manly recorded a much needed win on Saturday night despite giving up home ground advantage to the Broncos. Jake Turbo put his name in lights with a two-try effort while brother Tom overcame so early mistakes to return to his attacking best. Joel Thompson was a weapon out wide. Manly were dazzling in scoring 38 points. Sea Eagles fans will be hoping this kick-starts their season.
14. Cowboys (Last Week: 12)
The Cowboys just couldn't keep up with the flying Tigers on Thursday night. Jonathan Thurston and Michael Morgan were not allowed in the game and Jason Taumalolo and Coen Hess really couldn't get a foothold. The Tigers didn't let them. As hard as they tried the Cows just couldn't fire. It's a long way to the finals from here for the struggling Cowboys despite their stacked roster and starting the season as favourites.
15. Eels (Last Week: 13)
The losses continue to pile up in Eel town. The Eels looked good early with Bevan French lighting it up out wide and the Clint Gutherson show in full flight. Unfortunately when dragged into an arm wrestle the Eels just couldn't get the job done. They had plenty of chances and should have won this game but let themselves down with handling and penalties.
16. Titans (Last Week: 14)
The Titans are in a slump. To be honest I can't see where the answer comes from. Ash Taylor is playing a one man game plan at the moment and its not going to work. Bryce Cartwright needs to lace up the boots in park footy for the next few weeks. The lack of creativity in this side is worrying. On a positive the Titans were reduced to 14 and even 13 at times and still pushed the Storm to the final few minutes. That said, if this game went another hour I don't know how many points they score.
