An application has been formally lodged by a New York based club to play in the Rugby Football League (RFL), the professional tier in England.
The New York club is hoping to follow in the footsteps of the Toronto Wolfpack and will attempt to enter the Championship level in 2019, one tier below the Super League.
A professional rugby league team based in New York should have no trouble attracting star talent and bid co-founder Ricky Wilby has already confirmed that the club are interested in speaking with Jarryd Hayne about a return to the US.
"Jarryd Hayne would a perfect signing for a team in New York given his background in the NFL, given his love of American sports, given the profile he has in Australia," Wilby said.
"He would be a perfect fit. I've not spoken to Jarryd, but I would love to. It would great to meet with his agent and discuss a way forward."
Hayne has one year to run on his Gold Coast Titans deal, so the timing would be perfect for him to become the marquee player for the new club.
The Toronto club has had no trouble recruiting a host of former NRL talent which includes the likes of Fuifui Moimoi, Dave Taylor and Ashton Sims.
A club based in New York would be quite the lure for players and not just in the twilight of their career.
