Valentine Holmes has signed an NFL contractโ€ฆ of sorts.

After not making the cut for the 53-man New York Jets roster, the former Shark was signed to the team's practice squad, a job that still pays a lofty $200,000AUD. However, that dims in comparison to the millions he could be making at home.

According to news.com.au reports, at least five NRL teams, including the Sharks and Holmesโ€™ hometown Cowboys, have contacted Holmesโ€™ manager Chriss Orr to gauge his interest on returning to Australia and stardom.

While making the practice team is by no means a sure-fire pathway to the playing roster, it seems that Holmes is set on seeing how far he can ride the wave stateside. Being on the practice squad means that Holmes will get regular reps against NFL level defence, as well as stay a chance to be picked up by any of the other 31 NFL teams.

That said, because Holmesโ€™ was brought over as a part of an international program, there are limited places for him around the league.

โ€œAt some stage he will need to make a decision about his long-term future, Is it NFL or is it NRL?โ€ says Orr.

When asked, Holmesโ€™ was forthright about the possibilities the NRL presented for him.

โ€œObviously Townsville is my home, where Iโ€™m from,โ€ he said recently when asked about a possible return to the NRL.

โ€œAnd the Sharks, I played with them for the past five years so Iโ€™m sure whatever team can fit me in โ€ฆ Iโ€™d be happy to go anywhere.โ€

For now, it seems that Holmesโ€™ is happy to keep trying his hand at running back rather than come home to the comfort of fullback.

  1. Likely, he will sign for a team in the lower 8, who are foolish and desperate enough.

I honestly think that his value is massively the top and I feel bad for the team that pays overs to sign him, thus diluting their cap space.

He isn’t anywhere close to the best players in the game, yet we’re talking about paying this guy 700-1 million? Wayy too much for him.

I’m really concerned about the value of David Fifita for Brisbane, right now – because he has scored a few tries on teams that have defended him very poorly and it has pushed his value way up. Immediately, we’re getting the lower 8 throwing huge money at him because of it. Thus, cementing their places in the lower 8 because of wasting way too much money on one player.
