Wallabies star Israel Folau's younger brother, John, has quit rugby league to join the National Rugby Championship's Sydney Rays.

John, 23, made eight NRL appearances from his three seasons on Parramatta's list, before heading to the Sea Eagles' feeder club, Blacktown Workers.

He follows the pathway of his brother in switching codes, but a Super Rugby contract has not been promised.

“For me, coming over here it's like a fresh start, something I think I needed,” John told rugby.com.au.

“Growing up playing league my whole life, it was something I was just getting used to but coming over here put me out of my comfort zone.

“Like a kid who's going to his first day of school that's what I felt like when I was coming  over her. I enjoy it, it's a challenge I want to do.”

At 193, John fits the same physical mould as his brother to be successful in rugby union, although weighs in 10kgs heavier.

“I've always wanted the opportunity to one day play alongside him on a team and he says he loves it in rugby union,” he said.

“So having the opportunity to come over, God willing, the opportunity does arise and that makes the journey a bit more exciting for me.”

The Rays open their season against Canberra Vikings at Concord Oval on Saturday.
