Parramatta is confident they will retain captain Clint Gutherson, despite a gulf in the money involved in contract negotiations.

The Daily Telegraph reports the Eels are reluctant to increase their offer of $650,000 a season over three years, which is short of the four-year $750,000 a season deal Gutherson's management is seeking.

Gutherson's junior club Manly has expressed interest in the Eels' captain, with representatives expected to meet in coming days.

The Sea Eagles will be back to their full salary cap next season, but have superstar brothers Tom and Jake Trbojevic coming out of contract at the end of 2020.

Gutherson would also be unable to play in his preferred fullback position, which would mean a switch to the centres.

He would also play second fiddle to Daly Cherry-Evans and the Trbojevic brothers at the Sea Eagles.

Gutherson is well regarded at the Eels, after being named captain at 24 and nicknamed 'King' by supporters.

It is believed the Eels are open to offering Gutherson a fourth year on his deal to give him further financial security.

  1. It says that…
The way I see it manly are in a good spot with this.
If we get him great even if it costs 700k season, because it is only what we are paying walker all but now, but if we donโ€™t get him it donโ€™t matter either cause that is a lot for a centre and there will be plenty of others,
So I for one know this is just one to play out and will be happy either way

  2. I feel the same bob.
Happy to keep him but won’t lose any sleep over losing him.
He puts in 100% effort but isn’t the most skilful fullback in the game.
$650k is a very generous offer and I wouldn’t be going any higher.
If he signs with Manly we will throw a blank check at the Trbojevic brothers ๐Ÿ˜

  3. Iโ€™d accept the lesser value contract. Retain being the captain, playing in a brand new stadium with lots of fans and most importantly playing in your favourite position.
Or play your your biggest rivals, play out of position and not even be close to a fan favourite.

  4. But remember “full cap” is still $300k-$400k p.a less than what Manly got used to.
Sorry, I know pot to kettle, but I bought a large chips and couldn’t eat them all / was heading down beach etc. My bad. Bad Mighty.
But seriously, Kev, we agree, except I wouldn’t want to “throw a blank check (cheque)” at Tommy Turbo.

  5. I reckon you’ve nailed it, although he may not see Manly as his biggest rivals. That said, they did extend his contract by 2 years and then shopped him around a few months later. But now they want to buy him back at twice the price, so it’s all good.

  6. Agree as well, also except the last line. Look at Xerri from Sharks, or investigate if Ramien is actually wanting out if the Knights.

  7. Haha. I think the conversation went a little bit like this.
We have got Snake, Matai, ex parra Lyon, DCE, Foran.
Gutho we’d love to keep you, but, you are too good to be a depth player and encourage you to shop around
