St. George Illawarra's loss to the Cowboys last night has been compounded by the potential loss of Tyson Frizell for the next month, after the star back-rower was taken for immediate surgery following an accidental blow to his testicles in Saturday night's game.

Frizell was left reeling following a high speed collision with Cowboys fullback Jordan Kahu, after the knee of Kahu caught Frizell between the legs when the two were contesting a loose ball midway through the second half.

While the tough Dragons star elected to play on, he was sent for scans following the loss, which revealed the need for surgery.

In a statement on dragons.com.au, the clubs' Head of Athletic Performance Nathan Pickworth said Frizell would be monitored closely throughout the week.

"On Saturday night in our game against the North Queensland Cowboys, Tyson Frizell copped a blow to his teste," Pickworth said.

"Following the game, we investigated further with follow up scans which unfortunately resulted in surgery being performed in Townsville overnight.

"Tyson this morning is in a good condition and in good spirits. We will update Red V members and fans further as more news comes to hand."

While similar injuries have seen some players sidelined for up to four to six weeks, Cronulla's Kurt Capewell managed to return to the field within a week following a similar accident last season.

The Dragons next face South Sydney Rabbitohs on Thursday night at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.
