Former Gold Coast Titans head coach Garth Brennan has been appointed as the new coach of the Newcastle Rebels.

The Rebels have become one of the dominant teams in the Men's Country Championships - a competition described as the strongest local league in New South Wales according to a player survey.

Six years after earning his first NRL coaching gig, Brennan will now coach the Newcastle Rebels as they look to claim back-to-back Country Championships, per News Corp.

Announced as the Titans head coach at the end of the 2017 season, Brennan would take control of the club's coaching reigns in 2018 and 2019. However, he would be terminated from the job in mid-July 2019 after winning four out of a possible 17 games that season.

The termination saw Brennan's NRL coaching record consist of a 12-28 record with a winning percentage of 30 per cent.

While he may not have been successful during his tenure up North, his previous coaching stints saw him win the 2014 and 2017 NSW Cup with the Penrith Panthers and work as an assistant coach for the New Zealand Kiwis at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

As well as coaching the NSW Under 18s team in 2012 and coaching the New South Wales Residents side in 2015 - both games would end in losses. Most recently, he worked as the Newcastle Knights Head of Pathways in 2022.
