Paul Alamoti

Five potential landing spots for Paul Alamoti

A move across town? or up north? Here are several options that could suit the young Bulldog.

With Origin dominating the main stream headlines for the next few weeks, a few talking points will inevitably slip under the radar.

The NRL's silly season is really yet to hit full swing. We've seen a few big name signings for next season but there are plenty of moves to come.

One domino set to fall sooner than later is 19-year-old Bulldogs centre Paul Alamoti.

Despite an indifferent season to date, I still have no doubt in the world that Alamoti is going to develop into a weapon out wide.

Whether or not that will be with his current club in 2024 and beyond is up for debate.

Below are five likely destinations for the wrecking ball centre.

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs

Despite the impending arrival of both Bronson Xerri and Stephen Crichton, there's still a chance Alamoti remains with the Bulldogs.

Jake Averillo is off-contract and reportedly being chased by multiple clubs. Hayze Perham probably hasn't done enough at fullback to demand a spot with the starting lineup next season.

The pre-season hype on Alamoti was huge. He was the consensus favourite to win Rookie of the Year honours.

He probably hasn't lived up to that hype, but it's worth remembering this is a 19-year-old playing in a side struggling to score points.

Kayal Iro, 2023's NSW Cup Player of the Season and the player generally seen as a future star, was comfortably handled by Alamoti in last year's reserve grade Prelim.

Some will argue that's irrelevant but Iro is a player on a similar career trajectory and despite being a few years older, is at a similar place in his career.

I would be shocked if there wasn't serious discussions with hopes to retain their young centre. I see an Alamoti/Xerri combination as the way forward in blue and white.

If the Dogs are only able to secure one of Alamoti or Averillo, my money is firmly in the corner of the younger, and potentially cheaper, option.

North Queensland Cowboys

Peta Hiku's confirmed exit from the club at the end of the season opens up a spot in the Cowboys' backline. A spot I can see Alamoti filling.

With the greatest of respect to the current Cowboys lineup, they need an injection of youth. Something new. Something exciting.

Alamoti fits that very bill to a tee.

Tom Chester's injury will rob us of seeing what he can do but talk is his future is in the spine. I don't see a standout option in the Cowboys ranks to take that open centre spot.

Reports indicate the Cowboys may agree as Alamoti's name has seemingly been discussed.

This is a move that makes a lot of sense for the North Queenslanders. Whether or not a 20-year-old born and raised in Sydney would be willing to make that move shapes as the biggest question.

The opportunity would almost certainly be there. As is the chance to train beside one of the game's elite centres in Valentine Holmes.

Newcastle Knights

Reports of Newcastle's willingness to let Bradman Best talk to other clubs has me thinking a change may be in the air in the Hunter.

I'm not sure how serious those reports were but with Dane Gagai likely on his last NRL contract, it wouldn't shock me if the Knights were at least looking.

A shift up the highway shapes as a much easier one for a youngster than the long, long trip to Townsville.

Reverting back to Best, I don't know if I'd be shopping a 21-year-old with over 50 games to his name but if they've decided Best isn't the future, Alamoti might be.

They're the same height and only a couple of kilos (officially) apart. Alamoti is two years younger and looks to weigh more than the 98kg.

A cheaper, like-for-like swap could allow the Knights to free up funds to allocate elsewhere.

Newcastle also have a wing position being freed up via the departure of Dominic Young.

Placing Alamoti on the wing outside of Gagai to learn, with a long-term switch to the centres in mind doesn't shape as the worst option either.

Parramatta Eels

The recent rout over South Sydney aside, the Eels 2023 season hasn't lived up to the lofty expectations set. Perhaps change is on the horizon?

Reports linking the Eels with a move for Connor Tracey were quickly rubbished but I'm not entirely sold that the Eels have their long-term centre combination.

Alamoti making the short trip across western Sydney could definitively fix that.

I don't believe we have even scratched the surface in terms of what Alamoti is capable of. I believe his development would be fast-tracked playing outside of either Mitch Moses or Dylan Brown.

It would be remiss not to mention reports linking Clint Gutherson with a shift to the centres but his recent performances have surely resigned that thinking to the trash heap.

Parramatta are a team stacked with monster forwards, superstar halves and a top-class fullback. Money would surely be tight, so players of promise look far more likely than established stars.

Given Alamoti has more than half the 2023 season left, he could arrive as a mixture of both.

Keep an eye out as the Eels look very much in the position to pounce should the Dogs not stash Alamoti away quick-smart.

Manly Sea Eagles

Manly seem unwilling to commit to the reported Reuben Garrick move into the centres.

With the greatest of respects to Brad Parker, I don't see him as a premiership-winning centre. Meanwhile, Morgan Harper still hasn't recovered from his battle with Siosifa Talakai.

On paper there certainly looks to be a position available out wide in the maroon and white.

Salary cap space is always a talking point on the northern beaches due to the shadows cast by names such as Trbojevic (x2) and Cherry-Evans.

A young option with huge upside might be the go for the Manly recruitment team.

If the Dogs don't come to the party, I would be very interested to see if Manly's attention shifts to Alamoti.

I know of a few Manly fans who would be very much behind this move if it were to eventuate.

Verdict

I can't see a situation where the Dogs would want him to leave the club, but the decision may ultimately not be theirs.

With the Cowboys supposedly in talks with Alamoti, and the Eels almost certain to be in the market for a centre, a move looks very much on the cards.

Given the pre-season excitement over his pending first-grade debut, I'd be shocked if the Dogs don't do everything within their power to retain their young asset.

Firmly sitting on the fence here but I'm feeling it's 60/40 that he stays with the Dogs.
