Wests Tigers legend Robbie Farah has lashed out at former teammate Ryan Matterson surrounding his current contract debacle, saying he'd be surprised if Matterson remained at the club next season.
Matterson was allowed personal leave at the conclusion of the season, and has now been given permission to search for another club.
There's a strong chance that he won't be wearing a Tigers jersey next season, despite having two more years left on his contract.
As reported by the Herald Sun, there has been several in-house issues between the Tigers and the second-rower, which included the club playing him through injury - resulting in the 24-year-old searching for a move to a rival club commanding more money.
Farah has stated that Matterson is yet to earn his upgrade, and that he has brought the issues onto himself.
"The thing is, he thinks he's worth more," the retiring Farah said on an NRL podcast earlier this week.
"He came to us as a bench backrower and he had a great season. He shouldn't be upset with the Tigers. If there is anyone he should be upset with it's his manager.
"Because his manager said this is what you are worth, this is the contract I think you should sign.
"If he believes he is worth more, play another great year. Halfway through next year the club will be wanting to upgrade and extend you anyway."
Arriving at the Tigers at the beginning of season 2019, Matterson had a breakout season for the club. As one of the club's premier defenders, he also showcased terrific skills with the ball-in-hand.
Despite his obvious talents, Farah never expected Matterson to remain with the club next season.
"I would be surprised if Ryan Matterson is at the Tigers next year," he said. "I love Matto, he's a great guy ... (But) the way it has been handled, it's been quite poor from him and his management.
"He's probably worth more than he is on. But you signed a contract. Honour your contract. I think it's beyond the point of return. Ryan Matterson will probably be at another club next year."
