Every team’s current 2024 squad, best 17 and full list of off-contract players

What does every NRL club still need for 2024?

Published by
Scott Pryde and Ethan Lee Chalk

The 2023 season might be gearing up for the finals, but in the ever-changing world of the NRL transfer market, attention is already shifting to 2024 and beyond.

Every NRL side has less than ten spots available in their Top 30 for next season, while a select handful of clubs are closing in on a full complement already.

Zero Tackle have compiled the current status of every NRL club for 2024, with signings, losses, players still off-contract, full squads, best 17, and an overview of what every club still needs to be successful come next season.

You can use our easy dropdown menu below to navigate between each club, and we will update this every time there is a signing or player movement for next year so that you can keep on top of how your club is shaping up for next season.

2024 Development List

1. Coby Black
2. Israel Leota
3. Josh Rogers

What they still need

While the loss of Herbie Farnworth is also a large one, the club have a ready-made replacement in Deine Mariner, who has been chomping at the bit for more time in the top grade.

Right now, Corey Jensen is likely to hold a starting spot in the front row, and while Fletcher Baker adds value to a bench that could also feature Kobe Hetherington with Xavier Willison also fighting for a spot, their depth in the middle third is exceptionally skinny as it stands.

Pending the salary cap position, the Broncos could look at one more starting calibre player, adding to their depth.

Oates' re-signing means Jesse Arthars and Delouise Hoeter will both sit in the squad as depth in the backline, while Tristan Sailor has also put pen to paper on a new two-year deal to provide coverage at wing and fullback.

That would just about take care of the depth side of things in the backs, although another specialist centre to sit in the squad, not necessarily in the first-grade outfit, will likely be needed.

A promotion for Josh Rogers off a development deal to sit as extra coverage in the halves doesn't seem a bad idea either, while a player in the second row to serve as back-up is also likely needed.

What they still need

The most immediate and pressing need for the Raiders is to find a five-eighth to partner Jamal Fogarty in the halves, with Jack Wighton to depart at the end of the 2023 season.

At the moment, Ethan Strange and Kaeo Weekes are the best-contracted options, but he is yet to debut in the NRL and is more of a number seven than a number six.

There are also not many suitable options coming off-contract at the end of the season, so it's a tricky situation at best for Ricky Stuart's green machine as they navigate who will line up in the number six jumper next year.

The retirement of Jarod Croker creates the intriguing question as to which players will be the first ones used as backup if injuries occur. Albert Hopoate and James Schiller are all options.

Canberra's forward pack looks quite strong on paper, albeit lacking some depth, but they won't be going out and spending big money to bring another marquee forward to the club with an appropriate mix of experience and talent in the current roster - having just signed Morgan Smithies from the Super League. Still, another middle forward who is first-grade capable may not go astray in terms of building depth.

What they still need

Karl Oloapu (after he comes back from injury) is likely to be given the season-long keys to the number six jumper without better options on the market - and at any rate, the club's contract for Oloapu is a big show of faith. However, Phil Gould has admitted in the past that he is likely to transition into the lock-forward position.

This will give Toby Sexton the number six jumper, while Jaeman Salmon and Blake Taaffe will also fight for minutes, and there is a school of thought that suggests Oloapu will become a lock forward.

In the forwards, Ryan Sutton and Max King will lock down the middle, with Chris Patolo also in the squad. However, they will be without key enforcers Franklin Pele and Luke Thompson.

What they still need

The Sharks have locked up their squad for 2024 with only two more spots left up for grabs.

That said, they are somewhat short for depth in the second row. While Briton Nikora and Teig Wilton will line up there to start games, the only other options in the squad are Siosifa Talakai (who will start at centre) and Jack Williams, who can also play in the middle third.

As it stands, an injury crisis of any significance would leave the likes of Cameron McInnes and Dale Finucane shifting onto the edge.

The Sharks have some other big calls to make, and their squad could yet shake up before 2024 rolls around, with speculation that Kayal Iro is less than impressed with his lack of first grade. If he stays in the Shire, he is relying on coach Craig Fitzgibbon to take a gamble and drop an established player to get any consistent minutes.

Braydon Trindall is likely to be thrust into the number six jumper in a halves combination alongside Nicho Hynes next season.

What they still need

The Titans are another side with a full squad for 2024, with Des Hasler having little in the way of wiggle room ahead of his first season at Robina after it was confirmed by the club the former Sea Eagles and Bulldogs mentor would replace Justin Holbrook.

As it stands, the Titans will benefit greatly from the return of Beau Fermor, who has missed virtually the entire 2023 season with injury.

The Titans remain a relatively well-balanced squad with plenty of youth coming through the system, including Thomas Weaver, who could find his way into the halves next season if Tanah Boyd can't go to the next level, while others include the returning Treymain Spry, Iszac Fa'asuamaleaui and Keano Kini.

The Titans may be able to point at their centres as a potential area of weakness, although the recent re-signing of Brian Kelly hands them extra depth in the department.

What they still need

The Sea Eagles, heading into their second season under Anthony Seibold, still have a tiny bit of wiggle room with two spots open in the squad - it is unlikely to go any higher than that, though, with no contracted players likely to be heading out of the club at the end of this campaign.

In what is a very solid best 17, their recent signings in the backs give the club plenty of depth, with Jaxson Paulo and Tommy Talau both unable to find a way into a starting side that already is without Karl Lawton and Jake Arthur, who made the switch from the Parramatta Eels in the middle of this season.

It's clearly in the forwards where Manly needs to add plenty of depth across their final six signings. Matt Lodge, who is with the club during the second half of this season on a train and trial deal, will likely be one signature they aim to keep, while Aaron Woods has been linked with signing a development contract to remain with the club.

Given some of the relative youth in their forward pack with names like Taniela Paseka, Toafofoa Sipley and Sean Keppie, Manly could well look outside the club for further experience in their final roster spots, while promotions for Jamie Humphreys and Jacob Sykes from the development squad could also take place.

What they still need

The Storm has a bit of room left in their squad for next season, but with likely little in the way of money left, they could well hand promotions to development players Sualauvi Faalogo, Cole Geyer and Tristan Powell to utilise three of the remaining seven spots.

Outside of that, though, the other signings will also be for depth - the Storm have one of the better top 17s in the competition. When there is no way into the 13 for Nick Meaney and Josh King, and a player like Tyran Wishart misses out on the 17 altogether, that is clear to see.

Those depth signings, though - crucial as they are - will be needed more or less right across the board for the Storm, who have seven spots available.

A promotion for Geyer probably takes care of the need for another number nine, given Wishart can play there as well, while off-contract players, the off-contract Dean Ieremia, would take care of any further needs in the backs.

In the forward, Tariq Sims's leaving means the Melbourne Storm could look outside of their own group to bring in an experienced player.

This is fairly free play for the Storm though, given they have no obvious holes in their best 17.

What they still need

The Knights have little room to move with two roster spots open as it stands, and they will need to as well.

There are some significant gaps left to fill in this squad, although the dual arrivals from England of Kai Pearce-Paul in the second-row and Will Pryce at five-eighth have the potential to make a big difference on the outcome for Adam O'Brien's side next season.

Pryce will have a battle on his hands to claim a spot alongside Jackson Hastings in the halves following the club's recent signing of Jack Cogger from the Penrith Panthers.

As it stands, they still have plenty of decisions to make on off-contract players, with the most pressing of those likely to be Brodie Jones and Kurt Mann.

While the Knights are more or less set in the spine, with Kalyn Ponga, Pryce, Jackson Hastings, and Jayden Brailey backed up by Tyson Gamble, Phoenix Crossland and Simi Sasagi, as well as the possible addition of Mann, there are problems elsewhere.

As it stands, the Knights would need Dane Gagai to shift to the wing - that may happen anyway if they elect to accommodate talented youngster Krystian Mapapalangi in the centres, but there is no guarantee of that being the case for O'Brien. If they can't go outside the club, then the re-signing of Bailey Hodgson, Hymel Hunt or Enari Tuala may provide the depth needed.

The Saifiti brothers - Daniel and Jacob - lead the middle alongside Adam Elliott, but again, depth is a real problem and a player like Luke Thompson on a cut-price deal, or Jordan McLean, could be the way to go.

What they still need

The Warriors are just about at a full book. That would have been a concern in years gone by, but this time, it's stability that could be excellent for a Warriors outfit who have outperformed all expectations in 2023.

They have had just a single loss so far in Viliami Vailea, but Bayley Sironen, and Valingi Kepu will join him as departures.

The potential promotions out of the development squad for the likes of Jacob Laban or Zyon Maiu'u could take up two of the spots on the roster, while impressive young fullback Taine Tuaupiki is likely to take another after making his NRL debut this season.

Ultimately, the Warriors can hold off doing anything with their final two spots for the time being. This is a strong squad with depth in all the right areas, although there is an argument that a serious injury to Addin Fonua-Blake would leave them a little short in the front row, so potentially, that's where efforts will be focused for spots 29 and 30.

The Cowboys' biggest issue was finding a young centre to replace Peta Hiku and add some pace to what has been a failing right edge in defence. Viliami Vailea has signed from the Warriors, while Semi Valemei, who can play both wing and centre, has joined from the Raiders, so there are now options there.

With Chad Townsend seemingly going nowhere, the rest of the side is more or less settled, but with seven roster spots up for grabs, there is plenty of wiggle room to remodel for Todd Payten.

Elsewhere, this is a side that is more or less settled, with strength in the second row and spine, while Jason Taumalolo is a franchise player at lock.

What they still need

The Eels have just one spot left for 2024.

An extra depth option in the second row wouldn't go astray, and neither would one at prop, where Junior Paulo and Reagan Campbell-Gillard do an excellent job leading the way. It's depth there that is the issue for the blue and gold.

Elsewhere, the side is relatively settled, and it's unsurprising the Eels have been relatively quiet when it comes to clubs being linked in pursuit of off-contract players. There were talks earlier this year that Brad Arthur's side would chase an X-Factor-style backline player - think someone like Jayden Campbell - but that has ultimately come to nothing at this stage.

The Eels have a handful of development players they may think about upgrading for next season as well with their remaining spots, particularly given the salary cap is stretched.

Toni Mataele and Blaize Talagi are local juniors who both come with big raps, while Zac Cini has first-grade experience and will be on the lookout for another opportunity.

What they still need

As always seems to be the way, the Panthers are building a strong squad of local juniors, even in the face of a pair of high-profile departures. Stephen Crichton is off to the Bulldogs, while Spencer Leniu is (yet to be officially confirmed) joining the Roosters.

That does leave the side with some gaps, and at the present time, with five roster spots still available, it's the middle third where they will want to add some depth. Right now, Moses Leota and James Fisher-Harris are being backed up by Lindsay Smith, while Liam Henry and Matthew Eisenhuth will both come into calculations for game time next year.

The suggestion is that Penrith won't look outside the club to complete the squad either - and fair enough. Their production line of local juniors just continues bringing out the big guns on a yearly basis. Henry, Ativalu Lisati, and Mavrik Geyer are already being promoted from development contracts in 2024.

That said, Penrith will likely look to tie up more local juniors from either their SG Ball, Jersey Flegg or NSW Cup side.

They have also signed Paul Alamoti, Daine Laurie and Brad Schneider. The trio are all still young and will be looking to make an impression at the team when they get the chance.

What they still need

The arrival of Jack Wighton at Redfern continues to build to the narrative that the Rabbitohs have a very top-heavy squad, but realistically, this is a club well and truly in a premiership window.

Wighton's arrival pushes Taane Milne out of the 17 and means the backline has more depth that you can poke a stick at, so we will move on from discussing that any further, with the likes of Milne, Tyrone Munro and Izaac Thompson, as well as youngsters Leon Te Hau and Terrell Kalo Kalo (if he re-signs) left to fight over the scraps when it comes to minutes next year.

That said, there is the question of how to replace the versatility that Blake Taaffe brings.

The forwards could still use some work, though on Jason Demetriou's side.

The group in the starting pack are well and truly elite, but there will be a significant difference when it comes time to give those players a rest or if injuries strike.

Siliva Havili and Jacob Host provide enough to hang the hat on, while Shaquai Mitchell and Davvy Moale bring youth, but there is a feeling they may be one experienced forward short.

The losses of Hame Sele and Liam Knight may be felt.

What they still need

The skinny of the situation is that the Dragons have an urgent need - a backup hooker for Jacob Liddle. Connor Muhleisen, who makes his NRL debut after the departure of Moses Mbye, is the obvious signature, although he remains off-contract at the end of the campaign.

Apart from a backup dummy half, the other major question for the Red V is around their number one jersey.

Cody Ramsey has missed the entire 2023 season after picking up a rare illness. He could return in 2024, but if he doesn't, the club may well use their 30th spot to get a backup option for Tyrell Sloan.

Elsewhere, the Dragons have depth right across the board, although it's unclear whether Shane Flanagan will be able to do what Anthony Griffin couldn't and get the best out of the players on the roster.

What they still need

For a club who are reported to have salary cap concerns, the Roosters have a lot of players left to sign and a lot of problems to address in a squad that has struggled to go anywhere near their potential this season.

The first of those problems is back-up in the halves and back-up at hooker. Luke Keary, Sam Walker and Brandon Smith are currently the only three players of the 21 signed who can play in those positions.

Spencer Leniu will join the club. That will address some of the current depth issues in the front row, but the Roosters need to sign players across the board and players who are up to the challenge of playing first grade.

Expect Sandon Smith to be upgraded to a first-grade contract from his current development deal, too, in a move that will put pressure on Keary and Walker to perform in the halves.

What they still need

In short, not much.

The Dolphins have an almost full book with only a single spot left up for grabs in the 2024 campaign.

That's hardly a surprise given the number of players they signed to multi-year deals ahead of their first season - that said, they have still found room for Jake Averillo, Oryn Keeley Herbie Farnworth and Thomas Flegler.

None of their off-contract trio from the Top 30 have inspired much, so it may well be that Michael Roberts out of the development squad is promoted to the final first-grade spot for 2024 or Trai Fuller (who played one NRL game this season) if Wayne Bennett and his recruitment staff don't find the urge to look outside the club, and with the depth already on display, it would be a tough sell to convince any player to move to Redcliffe.

The Dolphins are in a good spot to continue building next year. Bennett has always said this isn't a one-year project, and their squad shaping as it does so early in the piece is a testament to that not being just talk.

Note: Adam Doueihi is unlikely to be available for the first half of 2024 as he recovers from injury.

What they still need

After the pressing issue of their halves in recent years, the club have brought in Aidan Sezer back to the NRL while also signing the young, talented duo of Jayden Sullivan from the Dragons and Latu Fainu from the Manly Sea Eagles.

While Adam Doueihi is very much a starter in the line-up, an injury against the Eels during the 2023 season means he will only likely be available from the middle of the season - a date that could be pushed back depending on his recovery process from yet another ACL injury.

That means Latu Fainu, Lachlan Galvin or Jayden Sullivan could be thrown straight into the deep end at number six to accompany veteran Aiden Sezar in the halves.

The forwards are a different story. The signing of Samuela Fainu adds to an already strong crop of talented youngsters coming through, who will be learning from the likes of David Klemmer, Alex Twal, John Bateman and Isaiah Papali'i. It goes without saying that the Tigers must focus their efforts on the backline.
