The Eels have softened their stance with the deadline given to Clint Gutherson's on signing a new deal, reports the Sydney Herald.

Parramatta originally gave the 24-year old a week to accept a $2 million deal over three years, but have back flipped on that decision.

It comes after handing coach Brad Arthur a two-year extension on Tuesday.

"The reality is [Eels general manager of football] Mark O'Neill and [Gutherson's manager] Sam Ayoub have continued their dialogue, they met today, but there is no deadline," Eels CEO Bernie Gurr told the Sydney Herald.

"The negotiations will continue because there is no deadline. We have continually told Sam and Clint we want him to stay at the club – we want Gutho at the Eels. He's the captain, he's a popular member of our club, so nothing has changed there."

It is understood that a rival club enquired about Gutherson's plans after being set the week deadline, with links to his old club Manly also being made.

The Eels are still looking to re-sign Mitchell Moses too, who is off-contract at the end of the season.
