The Brisbane Broncos have announced that Darius Boyd will take on club captaincy honours for NRL season 2017.

Boydโ€™s promotion escalates him into an esteemed company of Broncosโ€™ leaders, which includes Wally Lewis and Darren Lockyer, and more recent teammates Sam Thaiday, Justin Hodges and Corey Parker.

Boyd will be anointed in the Broncosโ€™ board room this morning by chief executive Paul White and head coach Wayne Bennett.

It is a huge honour for Boyd, who won an NRL Grand Final with the Broncos as a teenager in his first year at the club.

Now over a decade later, after playing at two other clubs, his return is complete as he will lead the Broncos into the 2017 season as club captain.

โ€œDarius has never made a bigger impact on the field than he does today, and that is also true for what he does off the field,โ€ said Broncosโ€™ chief executive Paul White.

โ€œHis work ethic and leadership are widely admired here at the Broncos, and Darius has been on a journey that has brought him to this point.

โ€œWe are very proud that he started his career at this club and now finds himself as the captain of the Broncos.

โ€œWe will support his leadership in every way possible, and wish him and his family congratulations on this wonderful honour.โ€

Boyd said he was excited at the prospect of leading the Broncos โ€“ even if it was never something he had dreamed would happen.

โ€œTo be honest this is a day that I never thought would come along,โ€ he said.

โ€œIf you would have told me a decade ago that I would captain the Brisbane Broncos I would have said you didnโ€™t know what you were talking about.

โ€œBut now the time has come I feel very honoured to be given this role, and aim to do my very best to live up to the legacies of the captains that have come before me.โ€
