Bennett throws hat in ring for Maroons job

If Kevin Walters heads to the Gold Coast, the Maroons may not too look too hard to find his successor.

Queensland coach Kevin Walters is currently favourite to take over from Garth Brennan at the Titans, and if that move does eventuate, Wayne Bennett could be in line for a return to the Maroons' top gig.

Given the Titans are in the middle of a football review, it looks as though Brennan's days are numbered. Although Walters has long been the favourite for the role, a new candidate has emerged, with Cronulla assistant Jim Dymock on the shortlist.

Dymock missed out on top jobs at Cronulla and Canterbury recently, and is touted as a coach-in-waiting.

However, if it's Walters who does in fact take over at the Gold Coast, the Maroons may not have to search too long for a new coach.

“If they feel there is a part for me to play and I feel I can do that, I will do that. It’s as simple as that for me,” Bennett told the Herald.

“It’s about Queensland. I’ve done so much coaching up there, nothing has changed for me.

“At this point there has been no approach, so that’s the first part I want to make clear.

“I have always been committed to rugby league in Queensland since I got into coaching. Besides coaching Origin, I’ve done a lot of stuff in regards to Queensland Academy of Sport programs, a lot of stuff prior to that, I’ve coached Queensland under-18s.

“I coached first grade for eight years before the national competition came along. I gave up my job in Canberra to come home and coach the Broncos.

“My commitment has been total to Queensland. That’s important to me.

“To cut a long story short, the bottom line is if they thought I was the best and Kevin moved on and wasn’t able to do it, I’d certainly look at it.”
