Former Canberra Raiders coach David Furner has signed a three-year deal with the Newcastle Knights as an assistant for Adam Oโ€™Brien, according to Fox Sports.

O'Brien was appointed as Newcastle's new coach last month after amid another disappointing season at the club spelt the end of Nathan Brown's four-year tenure.

Furner brings a wealth of experience to the Knights, as a member of the North Queensland Cowboys coaching staff during their inaugural premiership triumph in 2015 before moving to South Sydney in 2017-18.

He was an assistant to ex-Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens too.

During his playing days, Furner won a premiership with the Raiders in 1994 to go with the Clive Churchill Medal.
