Off-contract Rabbitohs forward Sam Burgess remains unsigned as speculation continues to build about his future.

The Roosters defeated the Rabbitohs today 18-14 to climb to the top of the ladder, and Burgess was asked on Thursday if he would consider joining his team's biggest rival.

โ€œErm, no.ย I donโ€™t think so," he toldย The Daily Telegraph.

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s not being disrespectful. The Roosters, theyโ€™re obviously a big club. But, no ... Iโ€™d struggle.

โ€œPlus Russell (Crowe) would probably shoot me.โ€

The star forward declared he won't follow in the footsteps of many Rabbitohs players before him and leave the club for a larger pay check.

โ€œIโ€™m pretty confident Iโ€™ll be staying at Souths for a while,โ€ Burgess said.

โ€œIโ€™m just waiting until the end of the year, until after I play the season out.

โ€œThis club has been great to me and my family and I think that works both ways in some capacity. Weโ€™ll get a deal done.โ€

Asked how well he understands the rivalry between the Sydney teams, the Englishman said he learnt about it quickly.

โ€œWell, it was my first game in the NRL โ€” the Roosters at ANZ Stadium โ€” so pretty quick.

โ€œRussell and I also spent a lot of time together back then, so he was drip-feeding me the history.

โ€œAnd the more time you spend in the local community, the more you understand what it means to people. This game on Friday will be no different.

โ€œIn saying that, though, I am an Englishman so I donโ€™t get too carried away with it.

โ€œI think itโ€™s cool. And the way supporters really get behind the rivalry, thatโ€™s fantastic.

โ€œBut emotionally I want to do my job ... hopefully thatโ€™s enough for the fans.โ€

But surely he must have a favoured rival from over the fence?

โ€œDylan Napaโ€™s actually got me a few times. But thatโ€™s all right, itโ€™s football.

โ€œThereโ€™s always some sort of collision or storyline coming out of these games.

โ€œBut I donโ€™t go in thinking about that. Weโ€™ll see what happens.โ€

Burgess added that he has not signed a new deal yet because he simply "doesn't need it now."

โ€œIโ€™ve got a job to do and thatโ€™s playing football.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to be talking about contracts four weeks out from the finals. Iโ€™ve got a lot of other stuff going on in my life so thatโ€™s something I donโ€™t need.

โ€œI mean, Iโ€™ve literally done a deal where Iโ€™ve walked past Ritcho (Souths GM Shane Richardson), heโ€™s said โ€˜this is where weโ€™re at andโ€™ Iโ€™ve shook his hand.

โ€œSaid โ€˜yeah, all right, weโ€™ll fix it up laterโ€™. Iโ€™m pretty relaxed to do a deal with.โ€
