Sharks forward Chris Heighington is set to become just the 26th player to notch 300 NRL games when he takes the field for the Cronulla club on Saturday against Newcastle.

Brisbane great Darren Lockyer has played the most games in history, with a 355-game career spanning 17 seasons between 1995-2011.

The fullback turned five-eighth may not hold that place at the top of the list for long, as Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith is bearing down on him.

If Smith can stay uninjured, he could eclipse Lockyer's record this season.

The only other active player on the 300 game list is Smith's teammate Cooper Cronk who joined the exclusive club last season. Cronk has so far notched up 305 games.
